Mustafa Genç, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sakarya Commodity Exchange, made a statement regarding the National Water Plan (2026–2035), which was approved by the Presidency and published in the Official Gazette.

Chairman Genç stated that, due to the drought and the impacts of climate change experienced across the country in recent years, the sustainable management of water resources has become critically important for Türkiye’s future. He emphasized that water is no longer merely a natural resource but one of the key determinants of agriculture, food security, and economic sustainability. He also noted that countries that fail to manage their water properly today will not be able to manage their food tomorrow.

Food Security

Highlighting that approximately 75 percent of the water used in Türkiye is consumed by the agricultural sector, as stated in the National Water Plan, Chairman Genç provided the following information:

“This data clearly reveals the responsibility of agriculture in water management. At the same time, it demonstrates how strategically important agricultural production is for our country’s food security. Ensuring the efficient use of water is just as important as maintaining the sustainability of production. Increasing water efficiency, expanding modern irrigation systems, and ensuring sustainability in production are no longer choices but necessities.”

Modern Irrigation Systems

Chairman Mustafa Genç also emphasized that producers must be supported during this transformation process in order for the National Water Plan to succeed, stating:

“Increasing financial support to facilitate the transition to modern irrigation systems, rapidly modernizing irrigation infrastructure, and expanding training programs on water efficiency are of great importance. Sakarya, with its fertile lands and strong production capacity, is one of Türkiye’s key agricultural centers. The conscious use of water directly affects not only today’s production but also the food security of future generations. Water management is not only an environmental issue; it is also a matter of agriculture and food security.”
