Rector of Bingöl University, Erdal Çelik, stated that Türkiye’s 5th-generation fighter jet TAI Kaan is among the limited number of platforms in the world with its low radar visibility and internal weapons systems. He also emphasized that universities are currently conducting studies on 6th and 7th generation fighter jet concepts.

Prof. Dr. Erdal Çelik was the 120th guest of the “SUBÜ Talks” organized by Sakarya University of Applied Sciences. Moderated by Associate Professor Harun Gül, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Technology, the session focused on localization in the defense industry, production capacity, and R&D activities.

Anka and Aksungur
In his speech, Çelik said:
“Localization means imitating existing systems, which can only take you so far. However, nationalization means going beyond that technology through R&D. It is not enough to produce a material; it must complete all technology readiness levels and pass certification processes. If you cannot produce your own technology, your system may be blocked when you encounter patent barriers. Our goal is to develop original and national technologies that will ensure full independence in the defense industry.”
Highlighting advancements in unmanned aerial vehicles, Çelik noted that platforms such as TAI Anka and TAI Aksungur demonstrate significant capabilities, with Aksungur able to reach 40,000 feet and remain airborne for up to 50 hours. He also pointed to the high-speed and highly maneuverable target drone TAI Şimşek as a system that further strengthens Türkiye’s capabilities in this field.
