Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (SASKİ) has implemented another project to protect the water level and quality of Lake Sapanca.

Launched with the aim of utilizing the power of nature to provide renewable energy and high-quality water, the project redirects spring waters flowing from the mountains into Sarp Stream. Following the implementation of the project, an increase in the flow rate of Sarp Stream—one of the tributaries feeding Lake Sapanca—has been observed.

The project begins at water intake structures located in the İkramiye and Fevziye neighborhoods within the Akçay Stream basin. Water entering the system at the Balıkçı Hydroelectric Power Plant (HES) is transferred via transmission lines to the Hacımercan HES facility. After generating electricity by turning the turbines, the water is conveyed to Sarp Stream through the newly implemented overflow system.

36,000 Cubic Meters of Water Per Day

This system, which supplies additional water to Lake Sapanca from alternative sources, will serve as a critical safeguard against drought risk. Thanks to the project, 36,000 cubic meters of clean water are supplied to Lake Sapanca daily. As a result of the project, which is planned to continue uninterrupted for three months, a total of 3.24 million cubic meters of water will be added to Lake Sapanca.

Providing information about the project, SASKİ General Manager Seyit Sakallıoğlu stated:

“Water coming from higher elevations, which was previously converted into energy and discharged into the Sakarya River, has now been redirected to Lake Sapanca through the overflow system and necessary works. With a gain equivalent to the consumption of approximately 216,000 subscribers, we will achieve significant savings. Through our ongoing investments to prevent water losses across the city, the proper management of alternative groundwater resources, and our support to increase the flow rates of streams feeding Lake Sapanca, we are taking steps to carry the lake into the future. Within this scope, by completing this project—one of our most important measures against drought—in a short time, we will supply approximately 1.116 million cubic meters of water per month to Sarp Stream and Lake Sapanca.”
