Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar announced that the Tığcılar Urban Transformation Project has officially begun. As part of the ground survey studies forming the basis for the building permit, drilling operations have started, with drilling machines set to reach a depth of 45 meters to collect samples from 28 different points across four streets. Providing information about the drilling works, Mayor Alemdar stated that the first phase of the Urban Transformation Project in Tığcılar neighborhood—an area considered highly vulnerable to earthquakes and posing significant risk in the event of a possible quake—has now moved into its active implementation phase.

We have achieved a consensus rate exceeding 80%

Mayor Alemdar emphasized that earthquakes are Sakarya’s most pressing reality and noted that they are working diligently to prevent the recurrence of the tragedy experienced 27 years ago. He provided the following details:“In Tığcılar neighborhood, we have ultimately achieved a consensus rate of over 80%. We will build a green, socially vibrant, and resilient city. Within the scope of the first phase, transformation has effectively started between Yeni Cami Street, Kol Street, Kadir Hoca Street, and the boulevard. Samples taken from meters below ground will be examined and technical analyses will be carried out. While administrative procedures continue, evacuation notices will be issued in the near future. Following the analysis process, safe structures—fully planned in every detail—will be constructed, and a new city will emerge, strengthening neighborhood culture and standing out with its social living spaces.”
