Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality shared with the public the climate, energy, and zero-waste initiatives it implemented throughout 2025 in line with its sustainable urbanism approach.

In the statement, the following information was provided regarding the investments:
With the Solar Power Plant (SPP) installed on the roof of the Intercity Bus Terminal, the terminal building’s electricity needs are met through solar energy. The energy generated by this plant not only covers the terminal’s consumption but also plays a significant role in meeting the electricity needs of nine major municipal service buildings located across different parts of the city.
Among the facilities supplied by the SPP are the AKOM Service Building, Akyazı Social Development Center, Main Service Building, Asphalt Plant, Fire Department, Karasu Social Development Center, Machinery Maintenance Center, and SGM Center. Thus, the use of renewable energy is ensured in numerous public buildings through a single production point.

Reduction in Carbon Emissions
During the first five months of 2025, a total of 484 MWh of electricity was generated from the SPP. This production provided a significant economic contribution. While the practice helps reduce energy costs in municipal buildings, it also plays an important role in lowering carbon emissions.Within the scope of the second phase of the Air Quality Improvement Project, 327 households were connected to natural gas. The project aims to enhance living comfort across the city, especially during the winter months.Karasu Coastal Park and Kocaali Central Beach were once again awarded the Blue Flag, an indicator of international quality standards. While the flag flew at two locations in 2025, it is planned to be raised at three beaches in 2026.

Zero Waste
Within the Inter-School Electronic Waste and Waste Battery Collection Competition, 3,853 kilograms of waste were recycled. Through education and field trip programs organized across the province, approximately 5,000 students were raised with awareness of climate change and zero waste. At the Sakarya Integrated Solid Waste Management Facilities (SEKAY), 18,294 tons of refuse-derived fuel were produced from waste in 2025. While 72,220 MWh of electricity was generated at the facilities, 6,727 tons of packaging waste were recovered for the economy. At the Medical Waste Disposal Facility, 1,556,664 kilograms of medical waste and 3,090 kilograms of waste pharmaceuticals were safely disposed of, thereby protecting public health.
A Scientific Climate Roadmap
Within the scope of the Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation Action in Türkiye Project, Sakarya—one of the pilot provinces—prepared its Local Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan (YUSEP).Defined with 106 actions across 12 sectors and supported by 387 monitoring indicators, this plan provides the city with a measurable and implementable roadmap against climate risks.
