Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality’s ‘Accessible Transportation Project’ Receives Award

The Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality’s public transportation system, which removes barriers for people with disabilities, was honored by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The award was presented by President Erdoğan to Sakarya Metropolitan Mayor Yusuf Alemdar.
Following the award ceremony, Sakarya Metropolitan Mayor Yusuf Alemdar made the following statement:
“We will continue our efforts to protect the rights of our brothers and sisters with disabilities, ensure their integration into society, and provide conveniences that improve their living standards. First for our city, then for Türkiye, we will keep working tirelessly and diligently so that all our citizens can live in peace, prosperity, and experience true social municipalism.”
The ‘Accessible Transportation Support System for Individuals with Disabilities Project’ was developed by the Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality.
Through the Sakarya Transportation (SAKUS) application, individuals with hearing, visual, and physical disabilities are able to manage their own travel plans independently in public transportation.
With the visual and audio commands provided in the app, disabled passengers can easily board all transportation vehicles, notify the driver of their stop with a single tap, and instantly inform the driver that a disabled passenger is on board.
With these features, the application has become an example for many local governments across Türkiye and has received great appreciation.

- Disabled citizens and their companions who download the SAKUS application to their phones can benefit from this service.
- The application provides voice guidance, line notifications, and stop information services.
- The app instantly notifies the driver when a disabled passenger is waiting at a stop.
- The driver’s screen displays which stop the passenger with disabilities will get off at.
- Thus, the disabled individual can plan the entire journey from the initial stop to the destination.
- With this project, individuals with hearing, visual, and physical disabilities will be able to plan their journeys independently with minimal assistance, experiencing a controlled, safe, and uninterrupted transportation process thanks to real-time information features.
- The application also offers companions the ability to create personal routes and track real-time locations.
