The Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (SASKİ) continues its environment-focused investments. Within this scope, construction works for the Kaynarca Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant and a 50-kilometer wastewater pipeline have been completed, and the facility has officially begun operations.
Having successfully passed all testing phases and completed discharge processes in a healthy manner, the plant has started treating the region’s wastewater through the completed 50-kilometer pipeline. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the facility ensures the protection not only of water resources but also of the Acarlar Floodplain Forest (Acarlar Longozu) against wastewater pollution by reusing treated water.

An Ecological Shield for Acarlar Longozu
Built on an area of 13,500 square meters, the Kaynarca Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant was constructed using modern engineering techniques. With the facility becoming operational, the natural structure of Acarlar Longozu—Turkey’s largest contiguous floodplain forest—has also been placed under protection.
Designed by taking into account Kaynarca’s current situation and future population growth, the facility has a capacity to serve 18,000 people. To ensure efficient operation, a new 50-kilometer wastewater pipeline has been installed in the region, collecting the entire system at a single center. This extensive network prevents wastewater from mixing uncontrollably with soil or water resources.

SASKİ General Manager Seyit Sakallıoğlu stated that the Kaynarca Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant has started operating smoothly and said:
“We continue our investments aimed at protecting our nature and our future. With this facility, whose testing phases and pipeline connections have been completed, we have secured both the drinking water resources and the natural environment of our northern region. This major project is not only an infrastructure investment but also an important step we have taken to protect Sakarya’s natural heritage.”
