Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar announced that work has begun on the Climate Change Adaptation Laboratory Park in Güneşler. The new living space will include areas such as environmental indicators, an air quality monitoring system, a water production device, solar-powered benches and lighting units, and a carbon footprint measurement kiosk. Alemdar stated that the project, built on an area of 5,000 square meters, will be completed entirely with EU grant support, without the use of public funds.

The Climate Change Adaptation Laboratory Park will be implemented within the scope of the project “Lap-Black Strengthening Local Intervention Capacity for Climate Change in the Black Sea Region.”

Mayor Alemdar noted that the project prepared by the Department of Strategy Development will include a non-traditional recreation area, a test-experience zone where environmental indicators will be monitored, and an air quality monitoring system, adding:

“Teams from the Department of Parks and Gardens have started their work within the scope of the project. The project will feature applications rarely seen in Türkiye, such as a water production device, solar-powered benches, lighting units, permeable concrete applications, recycling stations, a compost machine, and a carbon footprint measurement kiosk. The park will not only serve as an environmental test area but also as an education and awareness center, hosting thousands of teachers, students, NGOs, SMEs, and citizens.”

A Model Project for Türkiye

Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar stated that the project will be implemented in line with the Local Adaptation Action Plan, saying:

“We are taking an important step in line with our institutional sustainability vision. This project, initiated with EU grant support, will be the clearest expression of our green, social, and resilient city vision. The project, which serves as a model in Türkiye, is also designed as an experiential space. Our citizens, teachers, and students will hold hands-on environmental activities here. This park will be an important step that brings Sakarya’s sustainability goals into practice.”
