Serdivan’s market waste will be converted into organic fertilizer

The Serdivan Municipality is launching a new circular economy initiative that will transform vegetable and fruit waste collected from local marketplaces into organic fertilizer. The project is supported by the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, which has provided two composting machines worth TRY 5 million through a grant program.

Under the project, organic waste that was previously discarded will now be processed using modern composting systems and converted into high-quality organic fertilizer. The fertilizer produced at the municipal compost facility will be distributed to local farmers, contributing to sustainable agricultural production while reducing environmental waste.

The municipality expects the initiative to deliver several environmental and economic benefits, including:

• Reducing the volume of organic waste sent to disposal sites,

• Promoting a stronger culture of recycling,

• Preventing environmental pollution,

• Improving the efficient use of natural resources,

• Supporting sustainable agriculture through the use of organic fertilizers.

The compost project will complement Serdivan Municipality's existing environmental investments, including its Solar Energy System (GES), rainwater harvesting infrastructure, and other sustainability initiatives.

By integrating renewable energy, water conservation, and organic waste recycling into a single environmental strategy, the municipality aims to establish a model of sustainable urban management that can serve as an example for other local governments across Türkiye.
