Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality is launching an important project to strengthen children’s connection with nature and raise awareness about agriculture.

The Department of Agricultural Services of Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality, which has started working on the initiative, will establish hands-on agricultural areas specifically for children through the “Little Hands Agriculture Workshop” project. Existing mushroom production sites will be transformed into open-air laboratories, introducing future producers to the soil at an early age. The project will go out to tender on April 1.

Within the scope of the “Little Hands Agriculture Workshop,” mushroom greenhouses previously established on the Highways Directorate site across from Sakarya Park in Erenler will be revised and converted into a hands-on training area for children.

The workshop, planned for primary and middle school students aged 6–15, will allow children to directly participate in all stages of production—from sowing seeds to harvesting—offering them a fully experiential learning opportunity.

The project aims to instill environmental awareness in children, develop their sense of responsibility, and introduce future producers to the soil at an early age. Children will grow into “soil explorers” through the agriculture workshop.

Through agricultural activities, children’s motor skills will also improve. They will gain an understanding of patience and effort, while developing awareness of how healthy food is produced.

At the end of the process, students’ development will be monitored through evaluation reports and certified accordingly. Once implemented, the project will serve as an open-air laboratory for schools across Sakarya.

Training and activities are scheduled to begin on July 1. The tender for the project, which aims to promote awareness of nature and agriculture in society from an early age, will be held on April 1.
