Railway Line Reaching Sakarya City Center to Be Taken Underground
A 1.6-kilometer section of the approximately 2.2-kilometer railway line extending from Mithatpaşa to Adapazarı Station Square is being taken underground. Teams working on the site have begun dismantling the rails. Trains arriving at Station Square will reach the city center through an enclosed underground tunnel.
The project will also create the infrastructure needed to extend ADARAY to the districts. Currently, inbound and outbound services are operated on a single track. Increasing the railway connection to and from the station to two tracks will make an important contribution to Sakarya’s future transportation vision.
With Adapazarı Station being taken underground, the station will be transformed into a modern facility with four platforms. Two platforms to be allocated to Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality will lay the groundwork for a railway network providing access to Sapanca, Pamukova, Karasu and Hendek districts.
Providing information about the project, Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar said they are working to develop a broad-based rail transportation plan based on the goal of extending ADARAY to the districts, the Karasu Railway project and all existing railway lines.
Green Corridor and Adapazarı Railway Station
Alemdar said the 2.2-kilometer railway line between Adapazarı and Mithatpaşa would be freed from level crossings, congestion and the divided urban environment created by the existing railway corridor.
Mayor Alemdar provided the following information about the work:
“We will increase the single track to two tracks and take railway transportation underground, providing access to the city center through a tunnel. We are removing the existing infrastructure and taking it out of service. We want to complete the work in a short time and put into service a project that will give the city center room to breathe. Once the project is completed, the train will descend underground at a gradient of 1.6 meters, and the deepest point of the route will reach 12 meters. As part of the project, two underground stations will be built: Aziz Duran Park and Adapazarı Railway Station. The 2-kilometer corridor will be transformed into a green corridor where Sakarya can breathe. It will include bicycle paths, green spaces and rest areas. Four different level crossings will be removed from the city’s agenda, while the existing station building will be preserved in accordance with its original form without being demolished and will continue to serve the city.”
