Poor Planning Can Burden a City with Long-Term Problems

While some of the projects announced to the public by Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar are nearing completion, others stand out as large-scale investments that will shape the city’s long-term development vision. Planned across many areas such as transportation, infrastructure, culture, tourism, urban transformation, sports, and the environment, these projects represent strong steps that will define Sakarya’s future.

However, the main issue is not simply producing projects, but implementing them with the right priorities, timing, and spatial planning. As Sakarya continues to grow rapidly, it must manage this process not through emerging problems, but with a strong and sustainable infrastructure.

Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality also has ongoing projects in various districts, some of which are expected to be completed by the end of the year. Among these ongoing and planned investments, the concentration of large-scale projects within a single area stands out. A science center under construction on a 7,500-square-meter site, a city library with a capacity of one million books, a city museum, a new municipal service building planned over 30,000 square meters, and a mosque complex… All of these structures are being located within the same area, referred to as the “Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Campus.”

Although this model offers certain advantages on paper, it is likely to create significant density in the area once it becomes operational.

A large-capacity underground parking facility is also planned as part of the project, but the issue is not limited to parking alone. The simultaneous operation of so many functions will significantly increase both human and vehicle movement, multiplying the traffic load in the area. Visitors to the science center, library users, citizens coming for municipal services, mosque attendance, cultural events, and meetings… The overlap of all these flows will create serious traffic pressure in the area.

In other words, once these projects are put into operation, Sakarya will face a new test with traffic.

A City with High Car Dependency

Sakarya is a rapidly growing city characterized by horizontal urban development, inward migration, and a high rate of car usage. In such a city, concentrating density in a single point—if not properly planned—can create more disadvantages than advantages.

That said, it would not be entirely accurate to claim that clustering these projects in one area is wrong. On the contrary, if supported by strong infrastructure, this approach can become a major asset for the city. Such investments can be successful and efficient if supported by strong transportation corridors, smart intersection solutions, integration with rail systems, sufficient parking capacity, and pedestrian-oriented design.

Otherwise, the projects that are proudly presented today may become the center of tomorrow’s traffic problems.

Conclusion

Sakarya stands at a critical crossroads. The impact of these investments will depend not only on their scale, but also on how well they are integrated into the city. If properly planned, these projects can elevate Sakarya to the next level. However, poor planning can burden the city with problems that may last for many years.
